Abstract
Le département de l’Aude, avec sa marque « pays cathare », promeut un territoire médiévaliste c’est-à-dire un espace plus ou moins imaginaire ancré dans une histoire médiévale controversée, à partir de ses châteaux mais aussi de ses abbayes et de ses cités. Ces différents lieux touristiques accueillent désormais les visiteurs dans des espaces hybrides combinant billetterie, point d’information touristique et boutiques-librairies. Le « Pays cathare » y distribue alors une épicerie et une librairie médiévalistes contribuant à vendre un Moyen Âge détourné, plus proche d’un imaginaire fantaisiste que d’une histoire publique respectueuse des recherches scientifiques. L’enquête montre que plusieurs discours circulent sur les cathares. À côté des historiographies concurrentes et des récits fictionnels et médiatiques, un nouveau discours marketing institue désormais un historytelling territorial.
