Abstract
This article describes a difficult dilemma faced by the author because of her involvement in activism against oil and gas pipelines in Canada. The dilemma was produced by the combination of state surveillance, colonial divide-and-conquer tactics that create epistemological uncertainty in activist communities, and the imperative to produce ethical research with Indigenous people. Following an extended period of lateral violence during which the author completed her PhD dissertation, she emerged into a political and disciplinary landscape in which key aspects of her research became unsayable and illegible. At the same time, Dylan Robinson’s Hungry Listening covered very similar terrain in rather different ways to great acclaim. The author situates this duality in the contexts of disciplinary convergence within music studies and political threats to academia and suggests a capacious approach to handling academic controversies in this climate.
