IntroductionAux XIIe-XIIIe siècles, Montpellier devint rapidement un centre commercial florissant notamment grâce à son rôle dans le commerce et l’apprêtage des draps de laine. Étudiée par Kathryn Reyerson en 1982, la draperie montpelliéraine était, avant 1350, particulièrement réputée pour sa production de teinture écarlate, fabriquée à partir de l’acide carminique extrait des cochenilles (Kermes vermilio) qui parasitaient les chênes kermès (Quercus coccifera) de la région.
