L’empathie chez des étudiants en santé mentale en contexte de diversité

L’empathie, capacité affective et cognitive motivant à aider autrui, est essentielle aux professionnels en santé, mais peu étudiée chez des étudiants en santé mentale (SM). Cette étude compare différentes composantes du continuum empathique entre ces étudiants et ceux d’autres domaines (AD). 41 étudiants de premier cycle ont été recrutés, formant deux groupes: SM (n = 21 ; M = 22.43 ; É.-T. = 2.84 ; 12 femmes) ; AD (n = 20 ; M = 23.25 ; É.-T. = 4.35 ; 10 femmes). Les participants ont effectué une tâche où des agents virtuels (AV) diversifiés montraient un visage neutre, des expressions de douleur ou de tristesse. Les étudiants du groupe SM n’ont pas perçu plus d’intensité des états affectifs, ni montré plus d’empathie, mais ont offert davantage d’aide que les étudiants du groupe AD (p = .03, d = .64). Les deux groupes ont accordé plus d’aide aux patients appartenant à une minorité visible qu’aux patients blancs (pSM = .001 ; pAD < .001). Ces résultats soulèvent l’importance de la formation sur le comportement d’aide et de l’exposition à la diversité dans les programmes de santé mentale.
