Abstract
Fruit de la coopération franco-turque, l’Université Galatasaray, établie en 1992, est l’unique institution francophone d’enseignement supérieur en Turquie, pays non francophone. En s’appuyant sur la tradition de modernisation du pays qui s’effectua à travers le français entre le 19e siècle et la première moitié du 20e, l’institution reflète, d’une part, la volonté de préserver une tradition d’occidentalisation identifiée à une certaine élite inspirée des idées des Lumières, et d’autre part, la diplomatie culturelle de la France qui souhaite avoir des interlocuteurs francophones dans un pays avec lequel elle entretient des relations diplomatiques pluriséculaires, des liens commerciaux importants, sans oublier son importance géopolitique. L’expérience de cette université dont l’ambition est de devenir un pôle d’excellence dans son domaine montre à la fois les avantages et les inconvénients d’une université francophone de petite taille dans un environnement non francophone, tout en rappelant son rôle en tant qu’instrument de diplomatie culturelle.
