Abstract
Simultaneous Pancreas Kidney (SPK) transplantation is a highly effective treatment for patients with diabetes and end-stage renal disease. However, the risk of surgical complications makes SPK unsuitable for some patients. Simultaneous Islet Kidney (SIK) transplantation offers an alternative for these individuals. Despite the higher achievement of insulin independence observed with SPK, previous studies indicate that successful islet transplantation improves overall survival, cardiovascular outcomes, and kidney graft survival compared to kidney transplant alone.
