Une sensibilisation accrue face aux besoins des personnes à capacité physique restreinte pourrait permettre au Québec et au Canada de se positionner comme leader dans un marché des plus prometteurs. Mais encore faut-il que l’industrie touristique soit en mesure de répondre à la demande de façon satisfaisante et rentable. Qu’en est-il de la situation au Québec, au Canada ? Les hôteliers, les transporteurs, les restaurateurs, les gestionnaires d’attraits touristiques et culturels disposent-ils des outils nécessaires pour accueillir et servir convenablement la clientèle à capacité physique restreinte ? Ne devrait-on pas concentrer les investissements pour qu’en résulte une plus grande efficacité ? Le projet d’une Route accessible répond à cette préoccupation. À moyen terme, quand les besoins financiers seront mieux connus, Kéroul prévoit, dans un partenariat public-privé, créer un fonds qui aiderait les intervenants situés le long de la Route accessible à adapter leurs équipements et leurs infrastructures d’accueil. Afin que le projet réponde tant aux besoins de la clientèle qu’aux attentes des gestionnaires, le travail devra se faire simultanément sur l’offre et sur la demande. Le marché des personnes à capacité physique restreinte étant réel et en croissance, ce projet, qui vise à concentrer les investissements, aura des retombées aussi importantes que les efforts de promotion qui seront faits pour informer la clientèle.Avec le phénomène du vieillissement de la population, le Québec et le Canada ne devraient-ils pas prendre avantage de la situation en se donnant comme objectif de devenir « la » destination accessible mondiale ?
