Abstract
El Paraguay Católico é uma crônica que o jesuíta espanhol José Sánchez Labrador (1714 ou 1717 a 1798) terminou de escrever em 1770, em que relata sua experiência de mais de sete anos como missionário entre os indígenas Eyiguayegui (também conhecidos como Guaicuru ou Mbayá) no pueblo de Belén, província do Paraguai. Desde sua publicação em 1910, estudiosos têm buscado nesse texto elementos das culturas indígenas, mas ainda faltam estudos sobre o programa de evangelização defendido ali. Argumento que o autor preferiu um enfoque acomodativo de evangelização em decorrência da autonomia e do poderio militar de que desfrutavam os Eyiguayegui naquele momento, que impediam o uso de métodos mais coercitivos. A acomodação emerge na crônica como opção plausível aos jesuítas diante dos povos indígenas independentes, contatados em meados do Setecentos nas áreas fronteiriças das Américas.
