Cet article se propose de comprendre comment la pratique des linguistes américains a été influencée au fil des ans par les traditions institutionnelles présentes aux États-Unis, en particulier par la politique de l’organisation principale du domaine, la Linguistic Society of America (LSA). Pendant les quinze premières années d’existence de la LSA, une lutte constante a eu lieu entre les défenseurs d’une conception de la linguistique comme science pure et les défenseurs d’une approche liée à la littérature et à la culture. Au début des années 1940, grâce aux efforts concertés de Leonard Bloomfield, Edward Sapir, et d’autres, les linguistes « scientifiques » ont gagné.
