Les environnements urbains sont des inventions humaines qui s’adaptent au fil du temps. Cette adaptation passe par plusieurs cycles de transformations urbaines et dans certains cas par des processus de mutations urbaines. Cet article s’inscrit dans la dualité centre-périphérie en tant qu’enjeu lié aux cycles de transformation urbaine. Nous analysons les relations entre une ville périphérique et les centres urbains qui lui sont interreliés. Cette problématique enrichit le discours sur l’hétérogénéité et le caractère multi-périphérique des territoires. Nous prenons le cas de la ville authentique de Ganvié qui est en pleine mutation urbaine. Nous considérons que Ganvié est une ville lacustre dont l’évolution urbaine est liée au développement urbain des principaux centres urbains du sud du Bénin (Cotonou, la capitale économique, Porto-Novo, la capitale politique, Abomey-Calavi, Sèmè-Kpodji, villes dortoirs résidentielles). Les principales pistes de réflexion qui seront abordées sont les suivantes : l’organisation sociospatiale de la périphérie et la dynamique urbaine du couple centre-périphérie.
