Abstract
Abstract In the diagnosis of parasitic infections, the age of the fecal specimen is key. The physical characteristics of a fresh fecal specimen may aid in determining the possible organisms present. Fecal specimens may be described as formed, semiformed, soft, loose, or watery. When the fresh specimen is examined visually in the collection container, macroscopic helminth forms may be seen. The microscopic examination of a direct smear has several purposes: to assess the worm burden of a patient, to provide a quick diagnosis of a heavily infected specimen, to check organism motility, and to observe parasites that may be lost in concentration techniques. Fecal concentration has become a routine procedure as part of the complete ova and parasite examination, particularly for human clinical specimens. The zinc flotation procedure separates protozoan cysts and most helminth eggs from excess debris through the use of a liquid with a high specific gravity.
