Abstract
L’opération d’un réseau occulte en parallèle avec la loi officielle fascinait Balzac, qui y voyait un point d’accès critique et réaliste d’observation sur le système des forces de l’ordre social. Dans Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes, roman de sa maturité, il élabore une contre-société à travers le monde du crime et des courtisanes. Ce réseau souterrain se compare de façon productrice aux « hétérotopies » analysées par Michel Foucault, des « espaces autres » structurellement nécessaires à toute société qui reflètent et dérangent les lieux établis. Pourtant, si Foucault ne pense pas aux habitants voués à maintenir ces espaces autres, Balzac pour sa part cherche à faire parler ces personnages, surtout la courtisane Esther et le maître criminel Vautrin, dont les perspectives illuminent les deux versants, occulte et officiel, d’un monde qui reste profondément égoïste, conservateur et colonial.
