Abstract
En se voulant une étude des milieux, le roman zolien est un roman topographique. Cet article explore la représentation d’un espace romanesque peu étudié dans l’œuvre de Zola : les lieux du livre et de la lecture. Les romans de Zola mettent en scène des personnages-lecteurs qui font bon ou mauvais usage de livres qu’ils rangent, déplacent ou lisent dans d’étranges circonstances et des lieux parfois surprenants. Associés au désordre, au secret, au corps, au mouvement, ainsi qu’à des mondes utopiques, les espaces liés au livre dans La Fortune des Rougon, La Curée et Pot-Bouille sont symboles de transgression. L’analyse des lieux du livre dans ces romans permet de mettre en lumière une définition de la littérature perçue comme symbole de liberté dans l’imaginaire zolien.
