Abstract

Within the Color Glass Condensate approach to relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a phase of matter from the earliest stage of the collision is a glasma formed by highly populated gluon fields that can be approximately treated as classical. Applying the method of proper time expansion, which is designed to study this earliest stage, analytic formulas of various glasma characteristics are derived. We calculate components of the glasma energy–momentum tensor which include: the energy density, longitudinal and transverse pressure, and the Poynting vector. This vector allows one to obtain the collective flow of the glasma and its angular momentum. The temporal evolution of all these quantities is studied and estimates of their numerical values are given. Using the appropriate Fokker–Planck equation, we also derive glasma transport characteristics, in particular the momentum broadening coefficient q ˆ . Analysing the temporal evolution of q ˆ , we conclude that the short lived glasma phase plays an important role in the observed jet quenching.
