Abstract
This article explores the influence of the Delphic Sanctuary of Apollo on the Polis of Delphi. The sanctuary has historically been researched heavily while the polis has been sidelined. The sanctuary was responsible for the majority of the traffic through Delphi due to its oracle’s infamous status. The polis supported and was supported by the sanctuary throughout its lifespan. I used archaeological, epigraphic, and textual evidence to support my claim that the polis existed as a tourist center of the ancient world due to its sanctuary’s notoriety. They built their economy and infrastructure around what it could contribute to and take from its pilgrims. Understanding the role of the Polis of Delphi alongside the sanctuary provides a clear picture of the lived experiences of those both working in and those visiting the sanctuary. Additionally, the polis offers a unique perspective on the civic life of a small, tourist-centric settlement in the ancient world.
