Abstract Downwelling-favorable winds off the west Greenland coast induce onshore Ekman transport, thereby limiting freshwater influx into the interior of the Labrador Sea. Although the eddies shed by the West Greenland Current (WGC) provide an important freshwater source, the role of the downwelling-favorable winds in eddy formation is still largely unknown. Using the output of a very-high-resolution (1/60°) model, combined with idealized model experiments, we find that the downwelling-favorable winds push denser water over lighter water, which leads to a gain in available potential energy (APE). Although symmetric instability attenuates eddy formation by flattening isopycnals, the net effect of downwelling-favorable wind is a more baroclinic front along the WGC and increased buoyant eddy formation, which provides an additional freshwater flux into the convective interior of the Labrador Sea.
