Serum sickness–like reaction (SSLR) is a clinical diagnosis describing a constellation of distressing symptoms of both urticarial-like rash and joint swelling or arthralgia. These symptoms may occur with or without additional systemic features such as fever, angioedema, or gastrointestinal upset. Canadian and European studies have established the safety of testing children who have experienced SSLR while taking antibiotics, and their findings suggest that 10% or less of children experience an allergic reaction with antibiotic challenge testing.
