Abstract

Old water tanks often have internal walls for operational purposes like emergency management, cleaning, and fluid flow control during filling and emptying. However, these walls are rarely considered for their role in reducing seismic loads on the main tank walls. This study explored the impact of internal vertical baffles on the base shear of the main tank walls through numerical simulations and experimental models. The findings show that the height of internal baffles relative to fluid height and tank dimensions significantly affects hydrodynamic forces on the tank walls. Incorporating vertical baffles as independent structural elements with their own foundation significantly reduces the seismic demand by decreasing the hydrodynamic pressure on tank walls by 20%–70%, without adding extra forces to the main tank structure. This cost-effective approach offers a practical alternative to traditional methods, such as increasing wall thickness or strengthening foundations.
