“Right Through” Gen X to Gen Z: Adaptations of Alanis Morrisette’s <i>Jagged Little Pill</i> and the Performance of Intergenerational Solidarity

Abstract
When her album, Jagged Little Pill, was released in 1995, singer Alanis Morissette was proclaimed the voice of her generation. Eric Smith’s 2022 novelization of the album, however, reinterprets Morissette’s lyrics to appeal to the concerns of an entirely new generation—Generation Z, whereas the 2019 Broadway “jukebox musical” adaptation depicts inter-generational relationships. These two adaptations—and particularly the musical—have the potential to enable intergenerational solidarity or the creative and political alliances forged among people otherwise distanced by discursively defined stages in human development.
