Abstract
Zbigniew Brzezinski (1928–2017) served as President Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser from 1977 to 1981. Brzezinski’s father was originally Polish and moved with his family first to France, then Germany, and then to Canada. After earning degrees at McGill and Harvard University, Brzezinski became a professor of international relations, director of Columbia University’s Institute on Communist Affairs, and consultant to both American government officials and to the Democratic Party in the United States. He was a foreign policy adviser to Hubert Humphrey in the vice president’s unsuccessful run for the presidency in 1968. Four years later he became the director of the so-called Trilateral Commission – a group of business executives, political leaders, and academics interested in improving relations among the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. That experience introduced him to the then-governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, whose political aspirations took both of them to the White House in 1977.
