Abstract
Significance While the Conservatives remain most likely to win the upcoming general election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to stand down and leading Liberal leadership candidates disavowing their party’s signature policy on a carbon tax have robbed Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre of his two main election issues. Impacts US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports from February does not help the Conservative party. A rift between Alberta’s Danielle Smith and other premiers over how to respond to the US threats makes a united Canadian front difficult. Opposition parties are pledged to bring down the Liberal government once parliament returns in late March, triggering the election. The Liberal leadership race, which ultimately attracted no current cabinet members, will essentially be between two candidates.
