Abstract

Se presenta un análisis de las principales funciones que cumple la tecnología de información como parte del sistema-mundo moderno del capitalismo global, considerando el período de tiempo entre la segunda mitad del siglo XX hasta la actualidad. Siguiendo el planteamiento teórico de Aníbal Quijano, estas funciones se categorizan de acuerdo con las dimensiones de las relaciones sociales de trabajo, sexo y autoridad, y se relacionan correspondientemente con las instituciones del mercado capitalista, el patriarcado, y los estados nacionales y las organizaciones transnacionales. La identificación de estas funciones permite explicitar los fines con los que históricamente se ha diseñado la tecnología de información. Este conocimiento constituye un insumo para la toma de decisiones en procesos de apropiación tecnológica que posibilitan la resignificación del diseño de tecnología de información para atender las necesidades de las poblaciones latinoamericanas y de esta forma fomentar la mejora de sus condiciones de vida.
