Abstract
“Perfumed Nightmare” is a semi-autobiographical film that tells the story of Kidlat Tahimik, a young Jeep driver in the Philippines during the American occupation. Initially, Kidlat admires Western culture and dreams of visiting the United States, inspired by the Apollo 11 mission. However, his life changes when he travels to Europe to work with an American businessman. There, he begins to question his worldview as he interacts with people marginalized by progress, such as Lola, a street vendor. As Kidlat confronts the realities of colonialism and cultural invasion, his admiration for America fades. Her journey becomes a process of conscientization, where she learns to reflect on her reality and decides to transform it. The play criticizes colonialism and cultural invasion, highlighting the importance of communion with others to achieve personal and social change.
