Abstract
In the present paper, the crack-tip opening angle (CTOA) data used by Jiao et al. are assessed to show that the CTOA-fracture speed data were in transient regions of different types of drop-weight tear test (DWTT) specimens but not in steady-state fracture propagation regions. To predict the propagation velocity of running cracks, the steady-state CTOA is the controlling property. In this paper, a summary of experimental and modelling data of CTOA determined in the steady-state regions from standard DWTT specimens under bending and tensile loading and application to pipe tests is presented. The available data shows that CTOA is insensitive to fracture speed for a given steel in the steady-state region. In concluding, a brief discussion on the suitability of CTOA for control of dynamic ductile fracture propagation is presented.
