Abstract
This chapter describes how the mouth and mouthcare affect the social interactions of people as they age and grow frail, drawing particular attention to the concept of body image as a key factor in this relationship. It explains how people assess their appearance and health, and discusses the practical implications of these assessments for dental personnel as they manage the oral health needs and social expectations of people who are frail. Disturbance from oral diseases can have a profoundly disturbing effect on body image, precipitate depression, and predispose to morbid restrictions on social interactions. Dental personnel as active participants on transdisciplinary healthcare teams can alert colleagues to the disabling potential of these disturbances, and offer advice and management strategies to protect the lives of people who are frail and vulnerable.
