Abstract
Major disorders, such as dementia, sleep disorders, and dysphagia, increase the risk of poor oral health and mortality. Dementia is difficult to diagnose in its early stages. It is extremely disruptive to quality of life, and may in its advanced stage lead to care-resistant behavior that adversely affects oral health. Various sleep disorders are associated with breathing irregularities, such as sleep apnea, that are exacerbated, if not precipitated, by defective dentitions, with a reduced vertical dimension of occlusion and impaired muscle tone that compromises airway dilation. Oral appliance therapy may be a practical approach to ease symptoms of sleep apnea, especially for older people when other therapies are intolerable. This chapter also addresses dysphagia, the highly prevalent swallowing disorder, that poses a serious risk for aspiration pneumonia, especially when oral hygiene is poor. Each disorder, at the very least, disturbs quality of life but can lead to multimorbidity and premature death.
