Abstract
This chapter explains how current theories, models, and frameworks can help us to approach and understand health, frailty, disease, and illness, and how they relate to the healthcare of frail elders. It identifies some of the more dominant models and frameworks proposed to illustrate or describe the phenomena of health, frailty, illness, and disease, with a special focus on the possible effects of oral health and frailty on personal comfort, well-being, and quality of life. And, finally, it explains through a metatheory how several different dominant theories together form a realistic conceptual foundation for the oral healthcare of older people, and by which care providers can appreciate the complexity of the personal and environmental predicament in which people live when old and frail.
