Le travail a progressivement connu des mutations dans tous ses aspects, notamment celui relatif à sa nature : manuel et/ou intellectuel. Parmi les nombreuses causes de ces changements figurent le progrès technologique, le développement de l’intelligence artificielle, l’usage répandu de l’Internet, l’automatisation et la robotisation des activités. Ces mutations ont été accompagnées d’une accélération de la chute des emplois manuels dans certains secteurs, en particulier manufacturiers, en même temps qu’on a observé, dans d’autres secteurs, une pénurie de main-d’oeuvre dans les emplois à composante manuelle et dont l’exécution des tâches implique une mobilisation de connaissances (le savoir) et donne lieu à des pratiques (le savoir-faire) souvent sous-estimées. Ces changements ont généré des décisions de transformation, prises souvent sans compréhension suffisante des savoirs et savoir-faire impliqués, ce qui constitue une source de difficultés qu’il est pertinent d’examiner à travers le présent article. Dans un premier temps, ces difficultés sont cernées, puis analysées pour essayer de comprendre comment, dans une société dite de la connaissance, les savoirs et savoir-faire des travailleurs peuvent être autant ignorés. Dans un second temps, nous présentons des exemples de savoir et de savoir-faire associés à des activités manuelles et les problèmes résultant des décisions de transformation qui ne les ont pas prises suffisamment en compte.
