Resumo O calor é utilizado para melhorar algumas propriedades da madeira. Com isto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar os efeitos do calor nas propriedades físicas e mecânica das espécies Pinus caribaea var. caribaea, Khaya ivorensis e Corymbia citriodor e verificação dos defeitos após contato com água. Para tanto, os materiais foram processados nas temperaturas de 160, 180 e 200 ºC, analisando-se também o controle. Foram avaliadas a densidade aparente, a umidade de equilíbrio, a taxa de absorção de água, a retratibilidade da madeira, e a dureza Janka. As madeiras foram alteradas diferentemente: a densidade aparente foi alterada na temperatura maior e igual a 180 ºC e o teor de umidade de equilíbrio maior e igual a 160 ºC. As retrações se diferenciaram nos tratamentos com 180 ºC para Pinus caribaea var. caribaea e Khaya ivorensis e para o Corymbia citriodora, a partir de 160 ºC. A taxa de absorção de água só foi afetada pelo tratamento térmico nas madeiras de folhosas. Rachaduras visíveis foram notadas na madeira de Corymbia citriodora, especialmente naquelas cortadas tangencialmente. A dureza da madeira melhorou na temperatura de 160 ºC, menos para o Corymbia citriodora devido ao efeito das rachaduras.
