Abstract
Si la passion de Joséphine (1763-1814) pour les arts décoratifs, la mode et les ameublements est bien étudiée, son goût pour les étoffes d’ameublement l’est moins. Aussi est-ce intéressant d’analyser les textiles choisis pour Malmaison, demeure privée à la périphérie des résidences impériales : placées hors du champ des commandes du Garde-Meuble impérial, les livraisons de textiles révèlent davantage le propre goût de la maîtresse des lieux, Joséphine. À travers les ameublements successifs, les draps de laine et casimirs, références à la sobriété antique et militaire, prédominent. Moins nombreux, mais occupant des places d’honneur, les soieries et les velours de soie rappellent l’apparat et l’étiquette que connaît le couple impérial dans les résidences de la Couronne. Alors que le coton et ses conjugaisons (coutil, toile, basin, nankin et percale) évoquent une simplicité hiérarchisée à travers le château, la mousseline, tant appréciée par Joséphine, peut être vue comme un souvenir des Antilles, mais aussi de la féminité.
