Abstract
The novel Karukku , is the first Tamil Dalit autobiography written by a Dalit Christian woman. It was written in the Tamil version in 1992 by Bama Faustina Soosairaj or Faustina Mary Fatima Rani who is popularly known as Bama. The novel was later translated by Lakhshmi Holstrom, an IndianBritish writer, literary critic, and translator of Tamil fiction into English. Bama got international recognition when Karukku won the Crossword Award in 2001. The writer has been awarded a lifetime achievement award by Canada Tamil Literary Garden Toronto. She is bold enough to speak for women. Her novel echoes her life experience as a Dalit woman.
