Biblical characters on Moscow tiles of the second quarter of the XVIII century (based on the materials of archaeological and restoration works in Moscow)

Abstract
The article examines a group of stove tiles from the 18th century, discovered during archaeological and restoration works on the territory of the city of Moscow. All these finds are united by the theme of the paintings, which go back to biblical subjects. To attribute the tile drawings, graphic and textual materials related to the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, First Book of Kings, Third Book of Kings, Book of Esther, Book of the Prophet Daniel, Book of the Prophet Jonah) and the New Testament (Gospel of Luke) were used. The main source for the biblical images on the tiles examined are the engravings of 17th-century obverse bibles published in Strasbourg and Amsterdam. This allows us to consider the tiles as a historical source that reveals the historical and cultural context of the new urban culture of Russia in the 18th century.
