Morphological and molecular characterization of <i>Podosphaera hyalina</i> comb. nov. parasitizing creeping sibbaldia ( <i>Sibbaldia procumbens</i> ) in Pakistan

Abstract
A phytopathological survey was conducted in Abbottabad, Fairy Meadows, Mansehra and Skardu districts of Pakistan from September–November in 2020‒2023. A powdery mildew fungus of the genus Podosphaera was observed on the leaves of Sibbaldia procumbens, also known as creeping sibbaldia, a deciduous shrub native to Europe and Asia. This plant is of vital importance because of its edible, ornamental and medicinal properties. The fungus was characterized on the basis of morphoanatomical features of the anamorph (conidiophore, conidia, appressoria and foot cell) and teleomorph (chasmothecia with liberating asci and ascospores) stages. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences supports its recognition as a species of Podosphaera, distinct from P. aphanis. Therefore, the variety P. aphanis var. hyalina was raised to species rank as P. hyalina.
