Abstract: This note offers a reinterpretation of Aelius Aristides’ Oration 47.23, during which the sophist refuses to kiss the Roman emperor. The author argues that the ancient association between social kissing and disease may offer the best context for understanding the episode. Abstract: Cette note propose une réinterprétation du Discours 47.23 d’Ælius Aristide, dans lequel le sophiste refuse d’embrasser l’empereur romain. L’auteur soutient que cet épisode peut être mieux compris si l’on replace l’épisode dans son contexte historique, compte tenu du fait que les baisers sociaux étaient associés avec la maladie.
