Abstract

There are several challenges associated with the introduction and use of wireless devices using ultrawideband (UWB) technology. Some of these challenges are relevant to UWB compatibility with systems operating within radiocommunication services, the development of an appropriate framework for the introduction of UWB devices, the definitions and characteristics of UWB technology and devices, and the measurement of emission levels from UWB devices. The Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-R) established Task Group 1/8 (TG 1/8) to address these challenges. TG 1/8 met six times (2003 - 2005) and developed 5 documents on wireless UWB applications. This paper describes the mandate and structure of TG 1/8, the 4 draft new Recommendations and the draft new Report developed by TG 1/8, and relevant UWB developments within the ITU-R. This paper also summarizes the current trends in UWB regulations based on UWB rules adopted by some countries.
