Extract The bronchodilator response (BDR) test, which compares spirometry measurements before and after the administration of a bronchodilator (BD), is clinically used to support asthma diagnosis. Both the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and American Thoracic Society (ATS) and guidelines for spirometry (2005) [1] and clinical asthma guidelines [2] consider an increase of 12% and 200 mL in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) or forced vital capacity (FVC) from baseline to be a significant response to BD. However, the recent ERS/ATS guidelines for spirometry (2022) propose that a significant BDR should correspond to a change greater than 10% predicted value in FEV1 or FVC [3].
