Abstract
Drawing on a series of exhibitions curated and installed at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal throughout the 1990s and the early millennium, this essay analyzes how architecture and its representation in museological exhibitions have innovated forms of communication and display practices, transcending the traditions established by the fine arts paradigm since the late eighteenth century. The author argues that in addition to providing a heightened recognition of the narrative and performative potential of the exhibitionary setting, the discourses and tensions specific to architecture and architectural practice have led to a rethinking of the communicative potential of the exhibition environment. Principles inherent to architecture—spatiality, materiality, and the experiential—are fruitful when considering the possibilities of exhibition design to elucidate multiple levels of meaning, and these principles have led to architecture’s coming-of-age in the museological environment in ways that are specific to re aedificatoria—the art of building itself. S’inspirant d’une série d’expositions conçues et installées par le Centre Canadien d’Architecture à Montréal des années 1990 au début du millénaire, cet article analyse les innovations en matière de communication et de présentation apportées par l’architecture et sa représentation dans les lieux muséologiques, délaissant des traditions établies par les beaux-arts depuis la fin du dix-huitième siècle. En plus de mettre en évidence le potentiel narratif et performatif de l’environnement d’exposition, les discours et tensions spécifiques à l’architecture et à sa pratique ont mené à une réflexion en profondeur du potentiel communicatif de l’environnement de l’exposition. Les principes propres à l’architecture—la spatialité, la matérialité et l’expérience—sont générateurs de nouvelles possibilités pour le processus de design d’exposition. Ces nouveaux principes permettent d'éclairer des niveaux de sens multiples et ont mené à une nouvelle ère de l’exposition d’architecture selon la conception spécifique du re aedificatoria—l’art de l’architecture.
