Abstract
This essay reflects on the role of stray animals in the metropolitan city of Istanbul where stray dogs and cats are an inseparable element of public life. Unsurprisingly, a recently passed legislation that might potentially to lead to the demise of strays from the public realm received a significant social resistance. In a leisure context, paying attention to urban inhabitants’ interactions with strays, as it relates to placemaking in our cities and as an identity marker for neighbourhoods, the essay calls for a holistic consideration to Istanbul’s public life.
