Abstract
This chapter examines how social innovation intersects with Indigenous tourism in the Canadian Arctic. We focus on the sustainable livelihoods approach and how tourism operators contribute to communities, both in theory and in practice. Two specific operators from the Northwest Territories (NWT), Tundra North Tours, in Inuvik, and Dinjii Zhuh Adventures, which operates in the Peel River Watershed area, constitute the case studies for this chapter. Both companies are owned and operated as private ventures although they focus on contributing to community well-being and development. Utilizing a sustainable livelihoods framework, the case studies examine innovative initiatives to increase Indigenous entrepreneurship focused on social innovation in the Canadian Arctic context.
