Abstract
Abstract: This article draws attention to the neglected journalistic careers of both E. S. Dallas and J. C. Parkinson, whose extensive unsigned writings for the weekly and daily press were reissued in book form only to a very limited extent. Using a wide range of evidence, it adds significantly to the list of articles attributed to them, in particular their contributions to the Daily News as special correspondents in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War and its aftermath. By contrasting the limited recognition of their pioneering work with that of Henry Labouchere, who promptly commodified his Daily News byline as the title of the bestselling volume Diary of the Besieged Resident in Paris (1871), this article reflects on the different modes of reprinting material from the press in volume form and confirms that Victorian periodicals still speak less loudly than books.
