Abstract
Abstract: In late 1867, the Pall Mall Gazette published a series of articles and letters alleging that Babington White’s Circe was plagiarized from Octave Feuillet’s Dalila . Couched as an argument for literary integrity, the increasingly personal and virulent attacks targeted not only White but also the periodical Belgravia and its editress Mary Elizabeth Braddon. The resulting back-and-forth reads like a drama set in the pages of the newspaper; however, close analysis of the rhetorical moves of the various players points to larger gendered debates about who was allowed to operate in the literary marketplace and under what conditions.
