Abstract: This essay considers the multiple functions of the entity known as Sylvanus Urban in the mid-Victorian period, when the Gentleman’s Magazine was long past its peak moment of market and cultural dominance. The immortality of Sylvanus Urban was, to some degree, a long-running in-joke among “gentlemen,” but the longevity and durability of the joke suggest that the name negotiated a complex set of meanings. A persona whose existence was never understood as anything but fictional and yet whose continuity was, at the same time, continually asserted, Sylvanus Urban embodied, in his disembodied fashion, a fundamental principle of miscellaneity itself.
