Abstract

EMI with cardiac pacemakers implanted in people has been observed in power line environments in strong 50 or 60 Hz electric and magnetic fields. Many workers want to return to their jobs after receiving a pacemaker. Thus, it is essential to determine conditions under which EMI may occur. We have numerically evaluated induced potentials on unipolar and bipolar electrodes implanted atrially or ventricularly. A high-resolution (3.6mm) model of the human body obtained from MRI scans was used with the pacemakers in situ. Computations were performed with well-verified vector-potential finite-difference method. Three sources of interference were evaluated, namely electric field, magnetic field and contact current. Data are compared with the sensitivity settings for modern pacemakers. Likelihood of interference by the three sources modeled is also compared.
