Esther TRÉPANIER, historienne de l'art moderne québécois de l'entre-deux-guerres et directrice générale de l'École supérieure de mode, consacre cet essai au rôle de la mode et de l'apparence dans trois romans québécois qui ont comme décor le Montréal des années 1930, Bonheur d'occasion (1945) de Gabrielle ROY, Au milieu, la montagne (1951) de Roger VIAU et Élise Velder (1958) de Robert CHOQUETTE.Après avoir présenté les trois auteurs (« Introduction », pp.9-16), dans le premier chapitre, (« Florentine et le miroir aux alouettes de l'apparence », pp.17-32), on analyse le rôle des protagonistes du roman de Gabrielle ROY, Florentine et Jean, jeunes issus de quartiers modestes de la métropole québécoise, mus par une forte volonté d'ascension sociale.Comme le souligne la spécialiste, la mode, le maquillage et les accessoires deviennent des instruments fondamentaux pour la réalisation de leur rêve, mais également pour représenter leur condition sociale réelle.En effet, Florentine n'arrive pas à séduire Jean malgré sa beauté et son charisme puisque son maquillage exagéré ainsi que ses robes et ses chaussures de mauvaise qualité lui donnent un aspect grotesque ; de plus, trop pâle et trop maigre, elle marche anormalement à cause d'une paire de chaussures inconfortables.Elle reste ainsi prisonnière de l'illusion de paraître une bourgeoise alors que les gens s'aperçoivent de son origine modeste.Dans
