Concentration and Temperature Measurements in Swirling Hydrogen Flames in a Micromix Based Fuel-Flex Combustor

Abstract
In this study, we present experimental temperature and concentration measurements for 100% H2-air flames, stabilized via micro-mix fuel injection into a swirling crossflow of air. The experiments were conducted in a new combustor designed for fuel-flexible operation. Two H2 flame configurations are investigated; both operated at a thermal power of 5 kW but within flow fields of different momentum flux ratios. Concentration and temperature distributions were captured using planar Rayleigh scattering, and analyzed using a newly introduced Bayesian statistical approach. This method addresses challenges associated with fuel concentration stratification, in this case caused by the micro-mix fuel injection, which would otherwise be typically modeled under conventional flamelet considerations. The Bayesian technique is validated using a computational partially premixed H2 flame and a premixed laminar H2 Bunsen flame, and compared against conventional flamelet-based methods. Finally, the scalar structures, namely temperature and concentration contours, of both H2 flame configurations in the micromixed fuel-flex combustor are visualized.
