Abstract

Energetically efficient aircraft systems need to be developed consistently with the increasing air traffic demand for minimizing aircraft environmental impacts. The Environmental Control System (ECS) is one of the major consumers of non-propulsive power. The ECS design is a complex process because of the particularly demanding requirements and constraints arising due to its wide range of operating conditions. The present study aims to understand the ECS design complexities. The paper begins with a brief description of the ECS, followed by a summary of working principle of different ECS architectures. The requirements and constraints of 3-wheel PACK are elaborated. To explore the ECS design space, a preliminary study on the coefficient of performance of the reverse Brayton cycle is carried out. Finally, the 0D thermodynamic analysis of the 3-wheel PACK was developed using PROOSIS software. The developed model enables to investigate the influence of different components on the PACK outlet conditions, thus enabling informed design choices to be made when designing efficient ECS.
