Abstract Christian Wolff produced a distinctive and highly influential metaphysical system, but to understand the true character of Wolff’s metaphysics, we first need to understand the circumstances in which Wolff developed it and the place it occupied in his early philosophical and scientific project. In this chapter, many of the principal and marginal texts from the years 1703–1718 are considered with an eye to understanding the intellectual context for Wolff’s turn to metaphysics. These early texts include his first philosophical dissertations and publications, but also his more narrowly scientific and mathematical writings, as well as his reviews in the Acta eruditorum and his correspondence with Leibniz. Over the course of considering these largely neglected pieces, what will emerge will serve as the basis for a completely new and comprehensive portrait of Wolff, one that illustrates how firmly situated his metaphysics is within his broader scientific ambitions.
