Abstract
Introduction. Degradation of oak forests makes forestry scientists look for promising tree species to meet the raw material needs faced by woodworking enterprises. One of these species is red oak (Quercus rubra L.) which is resistant to harmful pathogens, vascular and necrotic and cancerous diseases, low temperatures, and characteristically exhibits a high growth rate. For the industrial use of red oak, it is necessary to study the influence of natural, climatic and forest growth conditions on the properties of its wood. The goal of the study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of the wood of red oak growing under the conditions of the Republic of Mari El. Objects and methods. The object of the study is red oak that grows in the forests of the Republic of Mari El. Wood density was determined in compliance with GOST 16483.1-84, the shrinkage coefficients - with GOST 16483.37-88, the swelling coefficient - with GOST 16483.35-88, end hardness - with GOST 16483.17-81, and compressive strength parallel to grain - with GOST 16483.10-73. Results and discussion. The density of red oak wood growing in the Republic of Mari El is 675.5±3.53 kg/m3, which is greater than the wood density of red oak growing in the Czech Republic (654 kg/m3), but less than that of red oak growing in Canada (760 kg/m3) and in the state of Mississippi (756 kg/m3). With an increase in the density of red oak wood, the end hardness of the wood rises within the range of 66.3±0.58 N/mm2, as in the case of English oak. The values of ultimate strength in compression parallel to grain in red oak wood vary within 58.3 ± 0.35 MPa, corresponding with that of English oak. The ultimate strength in compression parallel to grain (σ12) in relation to wood density (ρ12) is described by the equation σ12 = 16.295+0.063 ρ12, where the standard error of estimate (SEE) is 2.86% and the coefficient of determination R2 is 0.41. The coefficient of tangential shrinkage in red oak wood was lower than that of the main tree species and amounted to 0.22%; the radial shrinkage coefficient was 0.16%, and the coefficient of volumetric shrinkage was 0.40%. The coefficient of swelling in the tangential direction was also lower than that of the main tree species and amounted to 0.25%; the coefficient of swelling in the radial direction was 0.16%, and the coefficient of volumetric swelling was 0.45%. Conclusion. For red oak wood, all cutting methods are applicable, since the values of ultimate strength in compression parallel to grain and the values of end hardness of this species do not depend on the length along the radius of the trunk or the cardinal directions. Red oak wood will be less prone to change in linear dimensions with changes in humidity compared to English oak.
