L’article revient sur la préparation de l’édition russe du célèbre livre de Pierre Pascal, Avvakum et les débuts du raskol. À l’origine, se trouve une traduction effectuée, de la fin des années 1940 au milieu des années 1950, par un petit-fils de l’écrivain Lev Tolstoj, Sergej Sergeevič Tolstoj, sur la demande de l’épiscopat vieux-croyant de Moscou. Comme cette traduction n’était pas destinée à être publiée, il fallut effectuer un travail de rédaction important pour l’éditer en 2010 (précisions bibliographiques, vérifications des citations et des titres des œuvres russes anciennes). Les deux éditions moscovites (2010 et 2016) témoignent de l’importance jamais démentie de ce travail fondamental du savant français.
