Abstract
This chapter is focused on the impact of North American integration on women in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It begins by describing trends in female employment and labor force participation in the region and then connects the observed changes with developments in international trade and trade policy. The chapter underscores the important connection between the gender composition of the labor force in male- and female-dominated industries and the differential impact of trade on men and women in the region. The chapter includes a discussion of gender-specific trade policies, particularly in Canada, a global leader in inclusive foreign policy. The chapter then turns to describe trends in international trade policy as related to gender, highlighting the gaps that remain and the worldwide interest in equitable trade policy.
